Alain JOSSEAU (1968)

Alain Josseau’s approach is similar to that of a painter of contemporary history. At a time that seems to be the peak of their use, the artist places the viewer in front of images that tell stories and question History. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Alain Josseau, inspired by the cinema (Hitchcock, Antonioni, Lars von Trier or Ridley Scott) or by videos of real events and current affairs, questions images, their realities, their genesis, their distribution and their reception. From this artist who is passionate about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, «nodal point in the history of the image», who reproduced the moon landing during a performance and who «works a lot around the war, the biggest producer of cinema», we must retain an active attitude towards images. Alain Josseau’s work reminds the viewer that each image is a constructed thing and is only a fragment of what it claims to represent, from a precise point of view, rarely if ever neutral. From the beginning of their existence, in ancient Egypt with the «representations» of the pharaohs, to today with the official portraits of heads of state, images are tools for the dissemination of information and propaganda. Alain Josseau questions their exponential use, their instrumentalization, their detour... Images of the image of the image - photographed, filmed, zoomed, drawn, painted - so many semantic figures that Alain Josseau scrutinizes, parodies or embellishes, exposes.

His works are regularly presented in various museums and public collections: Fond National d’Art Contemporain, Paris; Marta Herford Museum, Germany; Les abattoirs, Toulouse; Cité des Science et de l’Industrie, La Villette; Frac Auvergne; Métro de Toulouse; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Meymac; Fondation EDF; Fondation Boghossian; Fondation Francès, Senlis; Photology, Milan.
