Erik Schmidt's practice has focused on urban landscapes that he has been able to apprehend during his travels. Combining the medium of painting and photography, the artist covers, paints and synthesizes through his gesture the photographed landscapes. Erik Schmidt explores, maps and transforms pictorial spaces. The colors, applied in thick and vivid strokes of paint on the enlarged prints of his own photographs, cover the portraits and the urban landscapes, condense into lines, signs, serial patterns. The photograph becomes underlying, the architectural lines accentuated by these flashes of color, these dynamic, nervous touches recreate the urban landscapes and the attitudes of passers-by.
